Song Bird Superhero by Karen Tyrrell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I really wanted to give this 3.5 stars, but there's no option for that! (Sorry, Karen). I liked it and can see why it would appeal to primary school kids.
Twelve-year-old Rosella Bird has just moved to a new house and a new school after being bullied at her old school. But bullies are everywhere, and Rosie soon has a run in with the nasty boy next door, Frank Furter! To her horror, she realises that Frank is also in her class at her new school.
Rosie is an inventor, and she is obsessed with flying, so, naturally, she invents flying machines, much to her mother's dismay (her mother is a health and safety officer!) Her heroes are Amelia Earhart, Leonardo Da Vinci and Super Girl. She also likes to sing, and one day, she discovers that her voice has more power than she could ever imagine. Her voice can make her fly...
Her new found talent gets her into quite a lot of trouble at first, and it seems like more of a curse than a gift. But with a little help from her friends, she learns, little by little, how to make it work for her.
When Rosie finds out that there is going to be a science fair at the school, she realises that she can show everyone what she can do. But Frank Furter has other plans. Fortunately, Rosie has allies - her friends Amy and Ben, and her teacher, Miss Darling, who has a little secret of her own.
This is a sweet little story about believing in yourself, the importance of friendships, and that bullies, every now and then, get what's coming to them! I've just given it to my 13-year-old stepson to read. I think he will enjoy it.
