My rating: 5 of 5 stars
"Duet" is another wonderful novel from Kimberley Freeman. It begins with a letter, and a secret that has been kept for thirty years...
The story revolves around two women - Ellie and Angela. Ellie is a budding opera singer from Germany, and Angela, under the stage name "Penny Bright", is a successful British pop star.
Their two lives become inextricably entwined when Penny suffers a terrible ordeal and becomes reliant on drugs to cope with the fallout. Her manager, George Fellowes, sends her away to a safe house to get clean, but he has a problem - he needs Penny to perform so he can recoup the substantial investment he's made in her career. By chance, he hears about Ellie and tracks her down, convincing her to take Penny's place while she recovers. Ellie is reluctant at first - but she eventually agrees, for a price.
This would have all been fine (if just a tiny bit fraudulent) until Penny runs away, and in the process, ends up with amnesia. All she knows, from the papers she has with her, is that her name is Angela Smith...
The story alternates between Angela's life and Ellie's, filled with twists and turns and some really surprising revelations. The two women at the centre of the story are well-drawn characters, sympathetic but flawed, and the secondary characters are all believable and very human. The story held my interest all the way through and the ending tied everything up beautifully.
I really enjoyed this book and have all Kimberley Freeman's other novels on my "to read" list!
