Definitely Dead by Charlaine Harris
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
In the sixth Sookie Stackhouse outing, Sookie's goes to New Orleans to sort out the affairs of her cousin, Hadley, who was murdered. Hadley was a vampire and, as Sookie finds out, the lover of the Queen of Louisiana, Sophie-Anne Leclerq.
The Queen has recently married the King of Arkansas, Peter Threadgill, a powerful and treacherous character if ever there was one!
When Sookie arrives, she meets Hadley's landlady, a young witch called Amelia Broadway. At first Sookie finds her somewhat annoying but Amelia proves her worth later on and they become friends. Meanwhile, Quinn is also in New Orleans as he is searching for a missing were, Jake Purifoy.
Amelia had put a stasis spell on Hadley's apartment to preserve it exactly as it was when Hadley was alive. Unfortunately she hadn't counted on Jake's body being stashed in a cupboard, or the fact that Hadley had turned him (to save his life) just before she died. So Sookie and Amelia find themselves trying to fight off a newly born, and very hungry, vampire/werewolf!
Sookie and Amelia are rescued by vampire police, and taken to hospital. Bill turns up and reveals - well, let's just say he breaks Sookie's heart with the truth about why he showed up in Bon Temps in the first place, and she is devastated.
Apart from all this happening, Sookie and Quinn are attacked, and later kidnapped, by weres, and it's all to do with Debbie Pelt, still causing trouble even though she's dead. And there is a major vampire battle, a missing diamond bracelet, a photo shoot with the very handsome (but very gay) fairy, Claude (Claudine's brother), Sookie discovers something very surprising about herself and there is a bit of sexual shenanigans with Quinn. Oh, and Amelia accidentally turns one of the other witches into a cat! The body count is high and bloody, not only vampires and weres but also the odd half demon!
This was another very enjoyable read from Charlaine Harris and I look forward to following Sookie's adventures through to the final book.
