My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this sequel to "Who's Afraid?". The first book was good - but I think with this second one Maria Lewis has really hit her stride. Go Maria!
After the tragic events of the previous book, Tommi Grayson is trying to come to terms with her new life as a "lone wolf". Most of the action takes place in Berlin, where Tommi's best friend, Josh, is in hospital battling another bout of cancer. Tommi and her sexy custodian, the immortal Lorcan, have travelled to Berlin as well so that Tommi can learn from a group of rogue wolves like herself, who run a nightclub called "Phases". Nice.
Meanwhile, the city has been rocked by the kidnapping and disappearance of a couple of babies, and the police are baffled. There have been no ransom demands and so the reason behind the kidnappings is not clear. But oh boy. We soon find out their fate and it's pretty gruesome.
The kidnappers, as it turns out, are not human. They are an ancient race of werewolves called the "Laignach Faelad" and they are downright evil. And they love babies, but not in a nurturing way. More of a - nutritional - way... Complicating matters is the fact that the whole lot of them were supposed to have been killed hundreds of years before. So who is behind their resurrection?
Tommi, Lorcan and the rogue wolves must find the big bad wolves' lair and kill them, before there are any more tiny victims. Also, she and Lorcan are still trying to fight their feelings for each other (fairly unsuccessfully, judging by the hot sex they keep having!), she gets arrested, new and surprising friendships are formed and there is a traitor in their midst. We also meet Lorcan's ex-friend, a Praetorian Guard called Heath, who comes to help in the fight against the bad guys. He's good value - and through him we learn a bit more of Lorcan's history.
There is lots of humour, the action never flags, and I really liked the rogue wolves and, of course, Heath, who has some of the best lines. Even Josh, cancer or no cancer, gets to play a vital role in the action and finds out the truth about Tommi's new life in a pretty surprising and dramatic way!
The ending lends itself to a further sequel, and I look forward to reading more about Tommi's adventures.
