My rating: 4 of 5 stars
In the fifth Sookie Stackhouse adventure, Jason Stackhouse, Sookie's brother, is facing his first full moon since he was bitten by a werepanther in the previous book. Because he was bitten, not born, he turns into half man, half beast, not full panther.
To add to the complications, someone is going around shooting shapeshifters! And now Sookie's brother is a shapeshifter! Goddamit.
Sam, being a shapeshifter himself, is shot in the leg and can't run the bar, so he asks Sookie to ask Eric for help. Eric loans Sam the charming Charles Twining, a vampire bartender who soon proves very popular at Merlotte's, But he is not all that he seems...
Then Sookie's house is set on fire, and she is saved by Claudine, her fairy godmother. Meanwhile, Eric senses something went on between him and Sookie but he can't remember and she doesn't want to tell him.
In an interesting subplot, Sookie is invited by Alcide to the wolf pack's ceremony to find a new leader, after the death of Colonel Flood. Alcide's father is one of the candidates, and Alcide doesn't trust his opponent, a were named Patrick Furnan. He wants Sookie to listen in to Furnan and his supporters. Sookie isn't too happy about it but she obliges. It's pretty brutal and Alcide's father - well, let's just say he comes off second best! We are also introduced to the character of Quinn, a weretiger. He's pretty cool.
Meanwhile, Sookie's friend, Tara, has become involved with a rather sinister vampire called Mickey. Sookie asks Eric for help to get rid of him, but in exchange, Eric demands to know the whole truth about his time with Sookie when he lost his memory. Sookie tells him everything, including what happened to Debbie Pelt and his involvement.
This was again a fun read with lots of twists, betrayals, hot vampires and weres - all the stuff I've enjoyed about the other books in the series. Sookie is spoiled for choice when it comes to possible (supernatural) love interests - Bill, Eric, Sam, Alcide and now Quinn. Lucky girl! I really enjoy the humour - even when things look really dire the humour is never far away. I'm looking forward to continuing the ride!
